What on earth is this?
« on: November 09, 2012, 04:53:06 PM »
Over the past week or so this strange looking creamy white 'thing' has been appearing over a small area of our land. At first I thought that an animal had vomited but on closer inspection, it sort of 'dissolves' into a slimy mess. On closer inspection when new, it has the texture and colour of a cauliflower and over time, it reduces into the previously described slime.

We suspect that it is a fungus of some kind. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Bob.

Is it Slime Molds Bob.

They will appear after a Heavy Rainfall with High Humidity

A creamy white slimy substance accumulates on the grass. Later, this slimy substance becomes powdery and white, gray or blue-gray. Slime Molds do not cause any direct damage to the grass because they only grow over the surface of the leaf and do not attack it. However, they may cause some injury if they remain on the grass for a long period of time. The exclusion of light may cause a yellowing and weakening of the grass, making it more easily attacked by other organisms. The simplest control of Slime Molds is to brush them off the grass with a broom or rake

Bravo Viv! You've cracked it!

According to this website, http://goo.gl/l08WQ it's also known, rather disgustingly, as Dog Vomit Slime Mold! Mmmmmm, nice!

Well, I don't know where they got the translation from because as far as I am aware Fuligo is Latin for Soot and Septica is Italian for septic. I am surprised that our ace researcher didn't know that!  ;D ;D

Where does 'Bob' enter into this? Anyway, I prefer the Mexican name of 'caca de luna'. I'll leave you to work that out!  ;D

BTW It is harmless to animals, humans and plants.
