Terrific old photographs
« on: August 17, 2012, 11:23:50 PM »
I came across this website whilst searching for information about the Corfu Photographic Society's current exhibition.

I thought it was a real find.

The photographs were taken by Major John Davenport Shakespear RHA who lived in the apartment above Edward Lear in Corfu Town. Edward Lear sold the Major his photographic equipment for 15 shillings.

Lovely photographs - the exhibition in Mon Repos is very worthy of a visit.

Very interesting, Bob. I hope I can get to Mon Repos. I have many family obligations, however, which are interesting in their own way, and probably won't be able to, so thanks for posting the photos.

Two of the photos seem to relate to the mention in the posts about the Lear show of a Turkish presence in Corfu.

I would also like to know more about the current photo exhibition. Several of the photos were very impressive in my opinion, especially those of Petros Zervos.
