September visit
« on: March 17, 2019, 08:56:54 PM »
Just booked for September. Five days in Thessaloniki then eight at the BellaVenetzia in Corfu town.  Any new restaurants worth a visit in town?  All recommendations welcomed.  We'll be spending the evenings in town but will also be travelling and lunching during the day

Hi Wynne,

not sure what type of food or place you fancy but for lunch you could try Panorama grill room above Agni (porta) good food and fabulous views.

In Garitsa Bay there is a lovely fish taverna with blue chairs Ta Psarakia tsi Gartitsas. We had a lovely meal here with some greek friends, very fresh fish and vegetables, not expensive either.

Enjoy your trip Shirley.

Thank you.  My wife loves fish so that's definitely going on 'the list'.

When in Greece we like to try traditional Greek food. In Thessaloniki we plan to go to some of the places in Rick Stein's Long Weekend trip.

Plenty of curry houses, Chinese, Thai etc where we live so no interest in visiting Greek versions of these cuisines

Also for fish, Fishalida at the bottom of the market. Wonderful, memorable food in the heart of town. My mouth is watering just thinking about it!

For very traditional food which you can choose from the pans, try Rouvas on the same side but a little further down from Fishalida. Open at lunchtimes only.

I was about to ask whether the fish restaurant was near to Rouvas as we have had some great meals there.  My wife is very excited about the fish restaurant while I'm more keen on the meat options. This way we could eat in separate restaurants and wave to each other across the square😊

We had two great meals at Fishalida, an excellent lunch at Rouvas and eventually had a very good meal at Nikolas taverna in Agni. Also had a very good Italian meal at Del Sole.  If you like craft beers I'd also recommend a trip to Divers in Corfu town where we had an excellent plate of sausage and cheese with a side of potato salad. Will get to the Garitsa bay restaurant next time.

A good rule is to look to see where the locals eat, often simple family-run places in the back streets and not necessarily the biggest, flashiest looking restaurants on the sea-front.

September seems such a long time ago now.  We had some fabulous meals in Corfu and Thessaloniki and have some wonderful memories, including a cookery lesson in a hotel restaurant in Thessaloniki.  I hope the restaurants we visited are all there when we return but it won't be this year. The nearest we'll get is a Greek dinner delivered on our 30th wedding anniversary in three weeks time.  Stay safe everyone.

Just realised I didnít mention where we were getting the takeaway.  If anyone lives anywhere near or is passing near to Tilsworth (off the A5 in Bedfordshire) we would wholeheartedly recommend a visit to The Anchor.  Best authentic Greek food we have tasted in the UK and to be honest much better than you would get in a typical taverna
