Smoking Ban To Be Enforced From Tomorrow
« on: November 18, 2019, 05:13:40 PM »
One day before the Smoking Ban official goes into effect in Greece on November 19, 2019, the Health Ministry published in the Official Gazette the full price list of fine for those violating the Law.

The fines range from 100 to 10,000 euros and will be charged on smokers as well as on businesses as well as managers of public facilities violating the Smoking Ban.

The minimum fine of 50 euros for smokers, valid since 2010, will burn the fingers of those holding cigarettes as it increases to 100 euros. It will be implemented to smokers in private and public enclosed places like public workplaces, public services waiting lounges, hospitals, schools and universities,  all public transport means, port and passengers stations, with the exception of places specially designed for smokers in airports. A fine of 500 euros will be imposed to the managers of the places where the smoking violation takes place.

This fine increases to 200 euros for those smoking in places where minors gather, such as kindergartens, schools, playgrounds etc.

A fine of 1,500 euros will be implemented to any smoking driver or passenger of a car where minors under 12 are present. occupied by minors under 12 years of age. the fine increases to 3,000 euros, if it is a public vehicle. In addition, drivers’ license will be revoked for one month.

Owners of restaurants, bar, cafeterias etc where the law has been violated will be called to pa heavy fines depending on the size of the facility

500 euros when the facility is up to 100 sq.m.

For facilities over 100 sq.m. the fine starts at 2,000 euros and will increase by 2,000 euros for every time the owner is caught to violate the Law. By the fifth time, the fine will be 10,000 euros and the definite revocation of its operation license.

For nightclubs and dining areas larger than 300sq.m. fines for facility managers start at 6,000 euros and increase by 1,000 for each repeat offense.

On Sunday, Health Minister, Vassilis Kikilias, announced the launching of an information campaign within the week as well as the activation of phone line <1142> where people can denounce  their complaints about violations of the smoking ban. Complaints have to be eponymous, though, and not anonymous.

Our local grill room has no ashtrays on the table now. That's a good start!

Also, our favourite coffee shop now has no ashtrays on the table.

No ashtrays in either the grill room or the coffee shop in the space of a week!

I went in to our favourite Pizza place the other evening, for a takeaway as usual due to their flagrant disregard for previous smoking bans. There were few people in as it was early, but nobody smoking and no ash trays on the tables. Just outside the front door was 1 table with 1 ash tray on it.

It seems they are taking the latest ban seriously so perhaps the government have at last cracked the problem.

Thank the Lord. Let's hope it keeps this way.

From Ekathimerini - http://www.ekathimerini.com/246636/article/ekathimerini/news/greek-pm-heralds-anti-smoking-plan

The PM, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, said, “The enemy is tobacco smoke, not smokers...”

Also, "According to Mitsotakis, the initial estimates of the recent crackdown on smoking in public spaces showed that compliance with the law is over 70 percent already. “Just as we learned to wear seat belts and helmets, we will learn to smoke outside bars and cafes,” he said."

(Not so sure about seat belts and helmets! Although there are more people wearing both, there are still too many who aren't.)

I really hope this anti-smoking plan is taken more seriously this time around.

Inspectors slap first fines on smoking ban in Lamia

One day after Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis officially launched the Health Ministry’s national action plan against smoking, inspectors and police officers imposed the first fines on a cafe owner and his customer in central Greece for flouting the ban.

Inspectors fined the customer 100 euros and the businessman 500, based on the upwardly revised charges announced by the government.

The same fines apply to closed office areas, all public transport, airports, train and bus stations, cafes, restaurants, bars and public service offices. Charges for those smoking in open-air leisure areas for children such as playgrounds as well as closed venues rise to 200 euros.

The inspection followed a call at the 1142 hotline established for people to report those violating the ban.

The smoking ban in all indoor public spaces was introduced more than a decade ago but has seen lax enforcement.

Presenting the Health Ministry’s new campaign on Tuesday, Mitsotakis said it has four main pillars of action: creating a non-smoking culture that emphasizes prevention; the protection of non-smokers; increasing medical support for smokers trying to quit; and evaluating new tobacco products and regulating their circulation on the market.

“The aim is not division but a new alliance for health,” he said.

As we had a late appointment in town last night we went for a meal before driving home. As we were close by, we went to Fishalida at the bottom of the market. Our favourite fish restaurant in town.

After being told yesterday that Greeks just won't eat in the places where they are told they can't smoke inside, most of the tables were taken, by Greeks! No one was smoking. No ashtrays on the tables.

Please say this is going to work this time!

Lots of evidence that Greeks are taking notice this time. Our local coffee shop has spent considerable money ensuring that there is a place for smokers that complies with the law. They are not alone!

Sounds like someone was having a miserable Christmas!

There's nothing holier than thou about wanting to eat and drink without some selfish people trying to poison you. I like to drink lager. Perhaps it's okay if I urinate over fellow diners?  ;D

They wouldn't do it in the UK or other northern European country. Why should they want to do it here? Thank goodness it actually appears that Greece is finally trying to do something to protect it's citizen's health from the effects of smoking whether self inflicted or passive.

Sorry, but as a smoker, I wholeheartedly agree with this enforcement. Don't understand why folks are complaining at all.
