No idea what to call this topic ?
« on: September 27, 2020, 02:02:44 PM »
Ok ,here goes !

Iím not in the mood for standing on ceremony,or ,pussy footing around the P C P!

I suspect Iím as guilty as most people when it comes to  Not thinking about people with lack of mobility?
That is to,say ,that my tolerance was zilch when it came to thinking about how life, people and situations affected them !

Well I can tell you first hand how my lack of mobility affects me,since I was diagnosed with parkinsons  disease on the 21 st August this year!

To those who donít know me but Say you look great !

If they see me move or walk ,their attitude changes dramatically ,the platitudes come out of their mouths, just meaningless words most of the time!

After asking the neurologist if Corfu was possible,he replied,go ASAP!
We explained our concerns about the terrain to get to our house!
Along with the bedroom being up an outside staircase, that Iíd slipped on in 2012
And I ended up in a Corfu clinic!

His reply was,go!
As long as you secure the hazards in your property,
Easier said than done!

We have a few very good friends in Corfu mostly Greek
They came to our rescue, with the offer of accommodation for the duration of our stay,as they had apartments not opening this season because of the covid
They arranged a back up of two staff to meet us at the airport with a mini bus incase my mobility scooter didnít go into the back of our car
Phew it went in !

Once in our apartment,of course I needed the loo !

The first thing I looked for was a grab rail anything I could hang onto
There was nothing not even the door knob as it was a sliding door, once closed the inverted handle sailed away into the distance!

How mY husband had the patience to listen to me calling Dennn alll the time is beyond me.

The shower was another obstacle for me as nothing to hold onto!

Den went up to our house to bring our shower mats for use in the shower!

Along with a toilet seat ,that raises the original one,not a permanent fixture!

As he had things to do during the day,,,
Making our house habitable and clean to move into, providing I could get down to it.
A visit to the bank in Acharavi,to pick up an updated bank card.

A few clothes and sensible shoes ,a must now!

Before he left me Alone ,,we had a check list,
Was my mobile phone charged ?
All emergency numbers up to date?
Did I need the loo ?
Where did I prefer to sit inside or out ?
He left everything I might need close by so i wouldnít have to move incase I lost my balance and fell!
I had to promise note to walk about..as it often happens that I gather speed and momentum,at home the cooker stops me lol
The only thing in the apartment was the patiodoor.

After spending two days in this place
It as soon to be my 70th birthday.
So he packed up my walking frame, mobility scooter my litter picker,A few bits n bobs and we headed off to my birthday surprise destinatioon

We stayed at Davini palace hotel by the airport !
Beautiful building,
But!it was full of marble floors!
Glass doors
Even the lifts were made of part glass.that was only reception

The room
Was very nice,a lovely view ,
But the bathroom gave me the shudders
It had a bath, one had to climb into the bath and use it as a shower tray!
The bathroom door was made out of frosted glass !
The vanity unit around the wash hand basin, had sharp corners that overlapped the loo
To use the loo seated, one had to squeeze into a tiny space, not a grab rail in site!

If you donít know the point Iím trying to make by now ,it is,these rooms are lovely to look at and see,if your able bodied that is,
Horrendous if the occupant is mobility challenged!
A bit wobbly on their feet
Or dare I say it ,,a bit on the fat  side !
Or getting on in years
Or everything Iíve mentioned  all four like I am.

Rooms like these are accidents waiting to happen!
We left the posh hotel after two nights
Vacated our apartment,to return to our Greek hovel and itís wet room,

Itís hi loo seat took pride of place on the old loo
The none slip floor mat, stuck onto the dated wall tiles
Waiting for itís next, time on the floor!t
The toilet brush moved away from the drain on the floor
And the plastic stool to sit on if one needs a helping hand when showering!

Not finished yet
If you want to comment
Please wait until Iíve finished ,hopefully that wonít be too long,as I need a break from writing, and sitting,on plastic chairs

Iíve had a rest,Iíll continue now.

Iíve found the Greeks are more aware of people  with mobility issues as theyíre always there to lend a hand!

What Iím suggesting is ,if you rent out a house or villa please make sure thereí are user friendly rooms for all ages, weights and m

Maggy,

Given your circumstances, I am amazed that you managed to write as much as you have! I await the 2nd instalment with baited breath.

Stay strong.

Ok,here goes!

I found out that the Greeks are more tolerant to people with mobility problems!
For instance,,when I was in Acharavi trying to negotiate a high kerb a few years back ,an old gent stepped off the pavement ,held out his hand to me ,helped me down to a more manageable level
Last year ,I tripped over the pavement, fell flat on my face.outside of the mon repose
Hotel
Floundering like a beached whale!
I was soon rescued by a young man on a scooter, who had stopped the traffic .
I soon had at least 3 motorists and the scooter driver driver picking me up and dusting me down !

The most recent fall happened last year while walking down the hill to our house,,
MrM had Jonah in his arms and had gone on ahead to light the way!

Suddenly my pace started to quicken,I gathered speed at the pace of knots!
No idea why or what happened ,I found myself lying on my back in some long  grass
No point in calling for help everyone in bed

I heard mr M talking to Jonah saying where is your nanny

Iím here I replied

I couldnít get up!
I got onto my knees but the loose stone dug into my flesh !

I couldnít be lifted my
Mr M,as he had a baby in his arms.no place to put him and keep him safe

In desperation he knocked on a neighbours door ,pointed to me lying in the dirt.
Soon the whole Household was awake,
Momma took care of Jonah and father and two sons got me up and mobile!

Once back in the U.K.mr M decide I had a problem .that wasnít connected to my two hip replacements in 2016
Or my sciatica in 2018

Something more serious ?

Sorry this post wasnít supposed to be about me,
But about hotel accomadation and their rooms

Saw my GP November in 2019

Iím back.doubt for long thoí

Saw Gp in November 2019

From him I was referred to a muscular skeletal person,I finally saw him in Mid jan 2020.

He asked some questions .most of my replies I answered No to!
My turn to talk about things Iíd noticed about me!

For the past: 2 Christmases,Iíd asked mr M to write out Christmas cards as my hand writing was tiny and unreadable,x

My speech since having teeth extracted at the dentist was slurred and no one could understand me and it had no volume
Little things like walking like a penguin with one flipper sticking out
Meaning my arm didnít swing when I walked!

M S person said heíd refer  me to a neurologist

I knew then although it hadnít been confirmed what my problem was ,

It took from the 21 January to the 21 st August to see the neurologist ,

I have a virtual appointment with him in July, that didnít go according to plan !
As it ended up as a telephone conversation only !
The site as down!

Not mine thereís !
A few questions asked by this prof,,
Talk about showing ya grandmother how to suck eggs ,I knew what his diagnosis was going to be as his questions were the same as the M S person had asked me!

My symptoms are the same as someone with Parkinsonís disease!

Thereís no test to prove that I have it!

My brain scan didnít show up any unusual things !

All normal in a person of my age!

What next I asked!
Iíll see you in person soon !
As I need to see you walk etc ,,once thatís done,Iíll give you some meds that may or may not help your condition!
Oh,by the way thereís no cure for Parkinsonís !

I saw the Prof in clinic ,,
He confirmed my findings and his own,,he would treat me as a person with Parkinsonís !

Are you certain ?
As I donít have any tremors !
Not all patients develop tremors he said
Is that a bonus I asked ?
It depends was his reply!

He sent an email to my gp instructing him to give me a prescription for the meds!
Youíll have them tomorrow he said!

Mr M chased our g p surgery up!
No,joy!

He then phoned the prof secretary ,,she was on leave!
Deep joy !
Losing the will to live!

Our g p surgery phoned .it had arrived and been authorised and sent to our local chemist!

Iím waiting to see them kick in !
As no, improvement yet !

Iím to have a virtual meeting with him when I get home from Corfu !

I was prepared for the results ,as I knew what it was I have.

But didnít think it would change my personality to the extent ,I donít want to talk to friends any more, not even on the phone!

Thereís been a lot of laughter As although the disease is nothing to laugh about, living and coping with it ,thereís been hysterical moments of laughter from me
Iíve renamed my husband Denacity tenacity / Denacious tenacious!

Or sometimes king drone!
Or if Iím really peed Off,

Iíve even told him to shut the 4caks up  :-[

Oh Maggy, you've really been through it you poor thing!  Glad that you can still laugh though!  Hopefully the meds will kick in soon and you'll start to feel some benefit.  Will they try a different medicine if these don't make a difference?

I'm glad you made it over to Corfu...are you still there now?  Shame the posh hotel wasn't manageable for you...I bet if you ask on Facebook for recommendations for hotels suitable for people with mobility issues you'll get some good suggestions.

On a different subject, how's the poorly doggy? x

Thanks Ribena
I suspect there are people out there who would swap places with me if their state of health is worse than mine!

Yes weíre her till mid Oct at our house!

Mr M has been making a path for my mobility scooter to get up n down to the car!
Iím too,old for, terrifying fair ground rised,I scream a lot coming down the hill,on my scooter
The posh hotel was an after thought on mr mís party
As heíd nothing planned for my birthday
So in a moment of madness he booked two night in the hotel

I donít think the hotel had availability for walk in showers ,no idea why as the hotel was nearly empty

It wouldnít have been my choice ,but the mon Repos was closed for the season ,my fave!
Looking at the runway was boring after a while lol
Mollys Quine we think, she with her real owner our daughter ,whoís giving her injections ,doing blood glucose ,and monitoring her food intake !

Thanks for asking

X

Some days I canít get going,itís as if my limbs donít get the messages from my brain to move!its called freezing.
I remember when I worked ,we had accleaner by the name of Sadie,l
The description of her 83 year old Ma ,was sheís like Myrna Loy on a low lights,
Had me in fits of laughter!

I myself describe myself as Myrna Loy on a low light
I had to google Myrna
Found out that was an actress in the 1920s
