Corfu Cantades
« on: March 06, 2012, 11:39:51 AM »
these are magical old songs which friends tend to sing when enjoying themselves together, ideally with a guitar accompaniment.

They are only from the Ionian islands, and sometimes refer to old local issues such as working in the Aspioti factory.

The Corfu Cantades Society gives concerts in the theatre sometimes, and there are many less formal recitals, sometimes in the open air in summer, in village halls, and also in certain tavernas, but as they tend to be spontaneous it is difficult to say when they will happen.

Outstanding exponents were husband and wife team Yannis and Katerina, and if you can get their CDs grab them.  Yannis sadly died last year.

Friends from other parts of Greece have argued that they are Italianate, not Greek, but I point out that we could say that their songs are Turkish in origin!

Jan, do you happen to know the titles of any of these CDs?

the one I have is just called Yannis and Katerina.  There are also some by the Corfu Cantades and other groups on sale at the shops in town-a good source has been the one in the small square at the end of Ag. Panton Street (there is also a music shop in that street which has them too)

I think they  marketed it themselves so it will be just luck if you find a copy!  You can always copy mine- quality not brilliant I am afraid

I really enjoyed the little quartet in Piazza after the Botides on Easter Saturday, singing and dancing to their Cantades - best bit of the day for me.

sitting in the town hall square the other evening a group, in costume, of about 5 mandolins and singers were walking round town serenading, and came into the square, it was really a lovely moment- thanks to the Dimos who organise this regularly.
