Reports in todays Athens News announce the death of Dimitris; age 64

The late Dimitris Mitropanos (2 April 1948 - 17 April 2012)

Respected Greek singer Dimitris Mitropanos has died at the age of 64.

The cause of his death at a private Athens hospital on Tuesday was not immediately announced.

Mitropanos, known for his mild manners and "manly" voice, was born near the central city of Trikala, and started his career in singing while still a schoolboy.

He sang in the laiko ("song of the people" or "popular song") style and worked with many of the country's best known composers, including Giorgos Zabetas and Mikis Theodorakis.

During career that lasted more than 40 years, Mitropanos enjoyed a major revival in popularity in the 1990s as many Greeks abandoned imported music and flocked back to live venues. (Athens News/gw)

Such a shame and 64 years is no longer old these days. He is one of my favourite singers and I am really sad to hear this. Rest in peace Dimitris.
