What's the live music scene in Corfu like?
« on: November 08, 2013, 10:46:36 AM »
For many years my wife and I lived on Crete, and made our friends by going to live gigs playing rock, blues and maybe even jazz and soul; often the bands and artists were ex-pats, but there was a really good number of Cretans too; now we're coming to Corfu to stay (for good this time), and I wanted to know what the live scene is like on Corfu?

I suspect the lack of response to Roger's question may provide the answer but are there any live concerts planned this year (I'm not including the band concerts in the square!)?  As an aside, we visited Valencia in June.  Now I know this is a large city, so no comparison with Corfu intended.  They had a programme of live jaz and blues concerts.  We just booked for whatever was on and were delighted to discover Madeleine Peyroux.  What a fabulous voice.  How have we missed her?  We now have four albums that we play in the car

there was a jazz festival on Corfu last week.  There are man groups especiall in town- remember the universit has  music facult.  Most music though is centred more classicall around the fifteen philharmionikis which flourish all over the island,  In town there are man concerts, not all classical- watch for the posters.  The big Philharmonikis lso run classes- a friend of mine is learning the saxaphone at Mantzarou.  There is a huge musical appreciation on Corfu, and ou will easil find others interested in the same kinds as ou

Thanks Jan I'm aware of the great classical traditional in Corfu as one of our friends there is a composer. If I'm honest jazz would be more our thing, especially saxophone. Are there any regular live music venues in the town? I remember about four years ago we passed what was described as a music  bar as we walked from Liston towards the old port but it was closed in late March.

i am told that there are, but to be honest I haven't been there- hopefull someone else with more knowledge will answer.  would think a good starting point would be the tsipouradiko behind the old law courts- know owner and son pla and it is popular with students

And I think there is a place behind Salto in the old port. Paul at Salto would know.
