amazon - an artist in corfu
« on: February 10, 2012, 05:42:19 PM »
Following on information on this site about a book called 'An Artist in Corfu' by Sophie Atkinson, I ordered a copy from amazon a few days ago. The book is about the visit of an English artist to Corfu (Gastouri) area around 1911.
I have seen the original, which was published in 1911, complete with colour illustrations by the artist.
According to the amazon listing, the book has been reprinted and a paperback version is available for just over 10 pounds.
The photo of the book shows a rather disappointing cover, which site members commented upon.
I ordered itnonetheless.
To my deep disappointment, the book looks nothing like the photo on the website - it is a very slim, almost pamphlet-type booklet, with a horrible shiny yellow cover. There is not one illustration inside, though the text begins with a list of illustrations.
Moreover this booklet cost me over 5 pounds in postage to Corfu - more than I usually pay for a much heavier book.
I shall of course complain to amazon, but I wondered if anyone else had this experience - I see that several people on the original thread/topic said that they had bought it.
I am usually so pleased with the amazon service - not this time.

Hi, i bought my copy from Amazon, published by Bibliolife. It has a white cover with a photo band across the cover of the suns rays shining onto a road. It does however contain the illustrations but they are just black and white copies.

Looking on Amazon it seems there are several different covers for different print dates (maybe different publishers but I dont know). One with sand dunes, one plain buff colour, one with books and a pear and one with a box of what looks like yellow flames. From your comments it would seem that they are not all identical in content.

I contacted amazon to say how disappointed I was with what they sent me - and received an immediate response and a full refund of book cost and postage.
Once again, thought disappointed by the book, I was pleased and impressed with their reaction. So I shall continue to be a customer!

Nafsika,

My copy is a hardcover with 215 pages and is about 2cms in thickness.

I have never seen the original so have nothing to compare this copy with. I was pleased with the book. I love the way the author describes the island. If I am disappointed with anything (apart from the sand dunes cover) it is that the illustrations are in black and white.

The good thing is that it gives another generation of people a chance to read it.

Maybe you should buy it Stevie while you're looking for an original copy. Then you always have one to dip in and out to and one to look after and treasure. We have a few books like that. A Kitchen in Corfu is one example. The kitchen copy is well thumbed and food spattered. The first edition is 'for best!'
